what's good | Amaro Montenegro, Posto Mobile + more

I am big on roundups and it has been awhile since I posted one!

I like to highlight favorite spots I'm visiting again and again, or restaurants, dishes, drinks and brands that made a lasting impression. Enjoy!

 Acai Bowl @ Energize
True to its name this blog focuses on boozy drinks and indulgent food. But I am a big smoothie bowl and fresh squeezed juice fan, too! Energize in Oak Square, Brighton is my favorite neighborhood juice bar for a delicious, healthy and beautifully presented smoothie bowl.

Juices + Smoothies @ Thirst Juice Co.

When I'm working downtown my go to juice bar is Thirst. Pictured is the Buddhabeet Juice made with beet, carrot, pear, pineapple + ginger. This is a perfect afternoon thirst quenching pick me up!

Fried Burrata @ Brighton Bodega

On our first visit to the new bodega the Fried Burrata took center stage - comforting, luscious, crispy and bathing in a savory tomato sauce. The other dishes were just so-so compared. On our second visit I was much more impressed with our dishes. With an on trend neighborhood vibe and a solid house cocktail list + 20 thoughtfully selected beers on draft, I am so thrilled Brighton Bodega has made a home in Brighton Center! Look for a full post on this place soon.

Negroni @ Townsman
...from healthy red juice to my favorite red cocktail! Townsman's Negroni or some variation of the classic usually graces their menu and always hits the spot.

Thai Tuna Maki @ Hillstone
Hillstone is an upscale chain restaurant in Faneuil Hall. I enjoyed hanging out at their polished subterranean bar and was surprised to see maki rolls on the menu. The Thai Tuna ($16) is eight squares with cubes of fresh tuna, avocado, a spicy thai sauce and macadamia nuts.

Amaro Montenegro @ Alibi

Amaro is an Italian herbal liquor that has for awhile been my go to digestif. I have been using it frequently to craft a delicious variation on the Manhattan. You probably drink amaro in cocktails all the time and don't even realize it!
A collision of sharp sweetness blunted by potent alcohol, an understated bitterness, scents of flowers and spices, I love it so! There are lots of brands out there but Lucano, Averna and Montenegro are my three favorites. Alibi at The Liberty Hotel hosted an amazing evening last month called "Montenegro Nights" where they transformed the heat lamp lit patio into a Montenegro shrine and even had a tattoo artist giving (fake) Montenegro bottle tattoos, reaffirming my adoration for the brand!

Authentic Neopolitan Pizza @ Posto Mobile
I haven't featured a food truck in awhile but I eat lunch at them all the time. Posto Mobile wood fired pizza is ridiculously good. Pictured is the Soppressata - namesake spicy pork salumi, mozzarella, Tuscan peppers, oregano, parmesan + arugula.

House Featured Manhattan @ Troquet on South
This my friends is what a $17 Manhattan looks like. It is made with mad river burnt rock bourbon, sweet vermouth, barrel aged bitters + cherries. I love cozying up to the intimate + sophisticated French Bistro that is Troquet on South.

Where have you been eating + drinking lately? What are some dishes I must try around town?!

Bols Genever x Jerry Thomas

A collaboration event with five Boston bars + Lucas Bols - a leading distilled spirits brand from Amsterdam and creator of Bols Genever is happening from December 12th - 16th to celebrate the legacy of bartending pioneer Jerry Thomas
Bols Genever is the predecessor of gin created from lightly distilled Dutch grains and a complex botanical mix. With a characteristic smooth malty taste, Genever is perfect for mixing in cocktails.

Jerry Thomas was a 19th century mixologist and bon vivant who championed cocktail recipes including many that featured Genever. Modern bar programs trace their roots to the recipes in his collection: How to Mix Drinks orThe Bon Vivant's Companionwhich at the height of his reign as King of the bar, were a revelation!

The weeklong Boston Bar celebration includes specialty Genever cocktails crafted at Mooo..., Highball Lounge, Tavern Road, Blue Dragon and Capo inspired by Jerry’s work. I attended a cocktail crawl event as media last week - enjoy the preview!

Mooo... | Smokey The Pear | Bols Genever, Belle de Brillet, Ginger-Honey Syrup, Lemon Juice // bartender: Greg Neises

Highball Lounge | Port of Hakata | Bols Genever, bar spoon combier kummel, acacia honey, lemon oil // bartender: Matt Schrange

Tavern Road | The Professor | Bols Genever Barrel Aged, Zirbenz, Galliano, maraschino cherry // bartender: Tenzin Samdo

Blue Dragon | Brandy Daisy | Bols Genever Barrel Aged, yellow chartreuse, lemon juice, splash of soda // bartender: Kate Rapin

Highball Lounge, Tavern Road and Blue Dragon are some of my favorite bars in the city for drinks and atmosphere. Tavern Roads bar pictured directly below features impressive shelving backed by gorgeous city views.

Highball serves one of my best-loved bar snacks the tater tot nachos and with a room full of board games is always a fun time. Note Highball is not open on Mondays and therefore we didn't taste the cocktail.

Tavern Road and Blue Dragon both in Fort Point neighborhood offer excellent menus; Tavern Road is Chef Louis Dibiccari's cuisine influenced by global street food, while Blue Dragon is Chef Ming Tsai's modern Asian gastropub. I was glad to eat at both these spots during the preview crawl as I love their food!

Mooo... is an upscale Beacon Hill steakhouse with a comfortable bar area. The dinners I've had in the past here were top notch. Mooo's bartender Greg really made an impression with his vivacious personality and his inspiration for a delicious cocktail.

As far as Capo in Southie - we didn't make it that far into the crawl! I've never been but hoping to check it out soon.
Organized by the amazing crew at Bols Genever with a Bustonian (limo bus) to take us from bar to bar, this evening was a blast! Not to mention the signature cocktails these bartenders created are fantastic.

Everyone get out there and toast to the bartender who started it all; Jerry Thomas!

five boston greats

Hi, Boston! How've you been?!

If you're in need of some local inspiration, or happen to be planning a trip to the city this summer, these are a few spots where I've been eating and drinking the last couple months for group dinners and date nights, ladies evenings and bar hopping - it's all here!

Highball is a vintage cocktail lounge with a playful edge; the drink program is serious while the rest of the scene evokes a childhood nostalgia. There's a room full of old school board games, (think Candy Land, Trouble, Guess Who), a menu board with brightly colored magnet letters, and anything from a rubber duck to a plastic bendy straw could end up in your drink.
The bar bites focused menu may be small but dishes deliver big time. The Tater Tot Nachos ($11) mean business. A tower of crispy tots comes in a mini cast iron pan piled with chunky guacamole, black olives, pickled red onions and dollops of crème fraiche. A heavenly melted cheese sauce pools at the bottom, so make sure to take advantage and dig all the way in. The Crab Rangoon Spring Rolls ($9) are also a really satisfying choice. I'm drinking an Epiphany ($11) with plymouth gin, bianco vermouth, agave, lime, cucumbers and pomello soda in a super cute retro glass.

An impromptu Friday night date at Eastern Standard turned into a group dinner (we ran into a few friends, who are meeting other friends) next thing you know, we're all slurping a couple dozen Oysters ($2.75 ea) and perfectly shaken, always strong cocktails are flowing. Combining gin, st Germain, lime, peychauds and parsely, The Thaw ($13) was a bright, herbal ode to springs arrival. In the Calypso ($10) vodka, celery and lemon keep things tart and fresh. The Friday Special: Saffron Fettucine with Shellfish ($26) proved to be an outstanding entrée. The pasta dish arrives with mussels and generous chunks of sweet, plump lobster meat, fava beans and cherry tomatoes all laced with green garlic and a terrific uni butter. Wow.

A few weeks later, ES's sibling-neighbor Island Creek Oyster Bar plays host to a crew of 17 ladies to celebrate Tracy's bachelorette party. We started with oysters and cocktails (and a trend in this post emerges, but it must be said!) The cocktail menu keeps you guessing and I have fun interpreting - Juniper = Gin, Agave = tequila, The Spice Island = rum based. The Salt Washed ($13) it is, with juniper, tarragon and celery. Lately, I'm all about celery and herb based libations. This one is an awesome pairing with some briny Island Creeks.

The first course presents a baby arugula salad in a light dijon vinaigrette and a gorgeous Salmon Tartare shared family style, along with individual cups of Clam Chowder. Their chowder is something to marvel at, featuring hand dug clams, house cured bacon and buttermilk biscuit crackers. The entrée pictured is the Pan Seared Gloucester Halibut atop a spring vegetable chowder and ICOB Bacon, paired with a bottle of the Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina Bianco ($38) a mineraly, slightly effervescent, food friendly Basque white wine. Desserts are divine, we share caramel milk chocolate pot de cremes and lime-coconut crème donuts with mango jam. (We paid $85 for the prix fix meal, inclusive of tip - arranged ahead of time.) For one of the freshest seafood and raw bar selections in Boston, featuring inventively prepared New England classics, Island Creek is one not to miss!

The youngest sibling of the former two restaurants, Row 34, located across town in Fort Point Channel is the self described workingman's oyster bar. The lively industrial space was the perfect spot for Friday after-work drinks and to celebrate a friends new job. Our bartender provided superior service; he was friendly, attentive (always noticed a newcomer) and kept the cold beers and impeccably shucked oysters and clams flowing. With a wide selection of craft brewed and funky European choices on draft and in the bottle, the beer menu (plus that raw bar!) is reason alone to make this place a destination.

Oh, Shōjō. I adore you, but, what an incredibly confusing experience with the hostess(es). I rarely rant, but here goes....
  • We arrive and hostess #1 affirmatively tells us the wait will be 45 minutes and takes my cell number.
  • The bar is packed so we head out and just as we are ordering a beer five minutes down the street, hostess #1 calls back and we are told our table is ready. (It has been five minutes. So from 45 to 5. What?!)
  • On our walk back, hostess #2 calls me again. (um, why are they calling me again?! So confused.) I assure her we will be right there!!
  • Upon arrival, hostess #1 explains our table is not ready, it will be 20 more minutes. What is going on here ladies!? Do we stay? Do we go?
  • In that moment two seats open up at the tiny bar, so we stay.
  • Before we even order drinks, not a minute later, hostess #2 appears with menus to seat us. What?!? Meanwhile, the table she appears to want to lead us towards has been open the entire time.
  • As we are now comfortably seated at the bar, we tell her no thanks to the table. This was all super annoying!
I still want to recommend Shōjō despite the hostesses antics. They were apologetic, and we're over it because we've been here before and know their creative take on Asian food and drinks are worth it. Everything has always been really freakin GOOD.

They focus on small plates, so plan on ordering a bunch to share. We devoured the Crispy Shrimp Bao ($9) with charred shishito and yuzu aioli, the Tiger Ribs ($9) with thai basil, shallots and peanuts and a bowl of Kimchi Fried Rice ($12) with a sunny egg. Cocktails are superbly done, like my Sum Ting Wong ($12) with ocho, campari, lime and rhubarb shrub. They have a unrivaled Asian craft beer and spirit list and then there's also a solid selection of the one's you know - Sapporo on draft and Singha (Thai), Asahi (Japan) and TsingTao (China) bottles. Service from the bartender is perfectly normal and attentive. Despite being really crowded, I still feel like this place flies under the radar. They take reservations for parties of 10 or more, otherwise, you'll just have to try your luck with a table.

Kia Cadenza at No. 9 Park

In a unique test drive meets dining experience, hosted at one of Boston's best, No. 9 Park, guests took the 2014 Kia Cadenza for a spin through Beacon Hill and Downtown before enjoying an outstanding three course meal.

Luxurious and comfortable, where high performance engineering and technology meets a handsome urban sedan, the Cadenza is making strong first impressions as it gets introduced across North America.

"The style was influenced by a private jet, particularly the wing area, and the flowing lines of a yacht." ~Louis Kim, Design Manager

A modern design and sophisticated finishes, plush leather seats, a sunroof stretching from front to back, buttons and cupholders in convenient locations - it is certainly an enhanced driving - and in my case - backseat riding, experience.

"Premium is the level of satisfaction experienced over a long period of time, the first impression should make a huge impact, but that impact should last and intensify as time passes." ~Kim
Salad of Mixed Greens | heirloom tomatoes, marinated watermelon, grilled halloumi
Carnaroli Risotto | corn, bluefoot chanterelles, parmigiano-reggianoAtlantic Hake | heirloom tomatoes, shellfish, plankton and saffron aioli
Duet of Beef | ricotta and whey, chickpea farinata, broccoli rabe
Olive Oil Cake | local strawberries, whipped mascarpone, fennel
Vanilla Rum Bavarian | peaches, mint, baba cake

The Kia Cadenza experience was truly a pleasure. So was this meal.

P.S. More No. 9 Park here.
