On our way home from New Hampshire last weekend we made a spur of the moment pit stop at Wild Willy's in Rochester. The casual Lone Ranger themed outpost is located right off Route 16 (Spaulding Turnpike) at 12 Gonic Road. Specializing in charbroiled burgers with pattys handmade every morning from 100% certified Angus ground chuck, they served up one of the best burgers I've had in a long time, especially considering the reasonable price point. (We also scored an online buy one, get one free coupon, so this meal ended up being a serious deal!) The French Fries ($2.50) made from hand cut Maine potatoes were not particularly crispy, though the golden brown exterior might lead you to believe otherwise. Even so, I thought they were delicious, as I do enjoy a real potato-ey fry! They were salted with restraint and nicely complimented the burgers. Adam's Raspberry Lime Rickey ($3) looked mouthwatering! He claims it wasn't his favorite rendition of the sweet and fizzy retro drink. I took a few sips and I thought it was refreshing, but it could have been a tad sweeter.
Willy's offers everything from bottled beers (they even had Red Hook!), to old fashioned draft root beer and ice cream floats. I had to give it up to the thick and creamy Coffee Frappe ($4.75) made with Gifford's Famous Ice Cream. It had been ages since I had a frappe and lets face it, I drink beer all the time, so switching it up in this instance felt like the thing to do. A hot juicy burger and cold creamy frappe makes for one heck of a combo. Speaking of that, from the menu with a plethora of burger options I chose the Wicked Good ($6.75) boasting thick cut sautéed mushrooms and onions piled a top swiss and cheddar cheeses. The tender yet firmly packed and juicy patty was cooked to the perfect temperature (medium, as requested) and sandwiched on a crispy, charbroiled bun. I thought this burger was awesome and the group concurred.

The counter service was efficient and the Cowboy themed interior space was clean and welcoming. Wild Willy's boasts seven other locations throughout Massachusetts (Needham, Quincy, Watertown and Worchester) and Maine (South Portland and York.) Prior to this trip, I had no idea this franchise even existed! I wouldn't hesitate to return and would definitely recommend them for a great tasting, inexpensive burger and killer frappes! Have you ever had a Wild Willy's burger? What did you think?
